Niijima Gardens presents the residential garden vernacular of Niijima Island, an isolated volcanic island eight hours by boat from Tokyo. Easily overlooked, the local makeshift gardens are unpretentious and functional with their bare foundations highlighted by the harsh winter. Without embellishments and only with materials at hand, these gardens frequently feature the distinctive blue netting seen ubiquitously throughout Japan.
